Deering → About Deering Banjos
Here at Steilberg String Instruments we carry the largest selection of Deering products for miles and miles. We’ve been dealing with them for years, are very passionate about their products, and we have a great relationship with them. We are very picky about the instruments we have our the store (One reason we carry Deering) and all of the pieces we have in stock are CHOSEN- the picks of the litter. We will adjust any of these instruments to a player’s specifications as well, so a person is sure to get just the right piece.
Handmade in Spring Valley, CA, Deering Banjos are truly a pinnacle in the Banjo World. A family owned business since their birth in the early 1970’s, Greg and Janet Deering have gone from carving banjo necks on their front porch to being the premier banjo company in the world, and building more banjos than anyone else in the United States. Getting started around 1970 at American Dream Music (the same place that launched the careers of Bob Taylor and Steve Klein), his original banjo designs were quickly refined, and the core of the main line of products was introduced in 1977. Through the years, while keeping one eye on tradition, Deering has kept the other one steadily searching for ways to improve the existing banjo formula.
Greg built his first Banjo in college out of necessity because he was playing all the time, but always wound up unsatisfied with the instruments he found available. Being a player, and a blossoming builder, he realized he really could address certain problems players encounter, and in turn, design an improved banjo. Furthermore, Deering has spent time with all of the great banjos throughout the instrument’s history and picked them apart, deciding what aspects he felt contributed to a banjo’s positive attributes, while also finding where these instruments fell short. Deering Banjos are built with all of these observations and improvements inherent in their design.
In more recent years, Deering debuted The Goodtime line of banjos, which are also made in their factory (Yes, made in the USA), begin in quite inexpensive price ranges and offer superior tone and playability for the money. Actually, some people here say if you close your eyes you probably couldn’t tell the difference between one of these and a much more expensive banjo. As I understand it, the idea was to build as nice of a banjo for as little money as possible. The result was outstanding - it’s truly remarkable how nice these banjos are.
Deering also builds banjos under the Vega name, and they do more than great justice to the historic name. With openback models like “The Little Wonder” and the “Vega No. 2,” (with a tubaphone tonering) Greg Deering and Company offer modern versions, true to the quality, looks, feel and sound, of older models but with the added bonus of being built under modern circumstances- a great benefit considering the materials and circumstances many of the older instruments were subject to. Under the Vega Name, they also build such instruments as the Old-Time Wonder, a high quality Frailing banjo, and the Bluegrass Wonder a resonator version of The Little Wonder.
From such pieces as the Sierra (we think it’s the finest inexpensive “Super Banjo” available), to the Golden Era (an improved Granada-Style), to the John Hartford (with Granadillo-wood Tonering), to the Electric Crossfire, on to the recent collaboration with Jens Kruger- the new and revolutionary Tenbrooks Banjo line (a pinnacle of banjo making in itself), Deering constantly creates beautiful, tonefully crafted, and original musical instruments. Remember, when you find the one you want, we’ll be happy to set up your instrument to your liking at no additional charge - We want you to enjoy making the music you love.
