Founded in 1953 by owner Shiro Arai, Aria Guitars began as a distributor of Classical guitars, something for which Arai has always had a deep passion. They began manufacturing both electric and acoustic guitars in the 1960’s. Based in Japan, they have grown to be one of Japan’s largest and most popular guitar companies. Perhaps an astute comparison might be to Aria’s contemporary car making companies like Honda or Toyota. Like those companies have done in their respective field, Aria, through the years, especially in the last 20, has successfully developed some high quality instruments, loaded with nice features, and at a fraction of the cost of larger name brands.
Electric Guitars offered by Aria run the gamut of styles and features, from their version of a modified “Les Paul” style (for a very nice price), to their set neck models of mahogany and maple, to their more ornate high end single cutaway models, everything they produce really is well made and great playing. A series of hollow body and semi-hollow body guitars provide a nice balance to their catalog, and their classy designs, coupled with high-end hardware and fine craftsmanship stand to further testament the fact that they are an excellent company.
We’ve seen their acoustic guitar line blossom recently. For years they have built some nice inexpensive acoustics – something we’ve happily offered to beginners as a good guitar for the right price, but recently they debuted some all solid wood guitars for a more than reasonable low price. Offered in Dreadnought or OM body shapes, the “Aria Dreadnought” series of guitars offer high quality woods, attractive inlay, and killer tone. For a mid-range priced acoustic guitar, these are one of the best.
Also new, as of lately, Aria has licensed the “Sinsonido” name and patent and are building many models of the travel guitars. Eye-catching and portable, these headless guitars feature a “body” that is really just a removable frame. They are extremely light, and portable, and feature a pick-up under the saddle which is actually two condenser microphones. A player can plug them into an amp (and it sounds really great!), or plug in headphones (which it includes) and play silently. Aria has priced them for a lot less than the original Sinsonido Guitars, and all prices include a gig-bag and a head phones. They are available in steel-string “acoustic”, nylon-string guitar, as well as fretted and fretless bass.
In the 1990’s Shiro Arai wished to expand his line and offer some high quality classical guitars. Being a classical guitar enthusiast himself, he wanted them to satisfy his demands for an instrument, and offer more than any other guitar for the money. Knowing he didn’t have the facility to build them in his native Japan, he went to Spain and set up a partnership with a builder over there. Since then Aria has been shipping some fine all solid wood, Spanish made, classical guitars. These pieces are very well made, begin for under $1000 and expand into higher price ranges. Truly a value packed deal, you can get into a professional grade instrument for a price which many other brands are still selling ply-wood student-grade instruments.
As with everything else, we’re choosy about what we carry, and Aria is a great Company with a lot to offer in a number of price ranges. They are a brand that deserves serious consideration alongside any other name, and in most cases will have a nicer guitar for less money.
